Have you noticed Downtown Adrian looking spectacular this Christmas season? It has been at least 50 years since the heart of the city looked so charming and inviting and had so many businesses, restaurants, arts & entertainment attractions, and public improvements on display.
Most historic buildings are now fully renovated, a work in progress or being planned. Many have apartments above the ground floor, increasing the number of people living in the Central Business District.
This year, some local merchants and enthusiastic community volunteers added a special twinkle to Adrian’s holiday cheer. Kim and David Horstman (Sauce), Kathryn Rink, Mary Martin and Jere Righter (Croswell Opera House), Scott Westfall (Chaloner’s), Dusty Steel (HB Steele Interactive Financial Planning/Raymond James), Kirk Valentine (Sphere Project Management), Robynne Cook and Trevor Perdue (Get Growing), former Mayor Jim Berryman, Women’s Ice Hockey and Synchronized Skating teams at Adrian College, Mayor Jacobson, the City of Adrian and Adrian DDA combined efforts to raise over $45,000 and provide countless hours of volunteer labor and in-kind contributions to freshen up and add to holiday lights, garland, trees and the giant snow flakes at the Four Corners. PlaneWave trimmed bushes and mounted wreaths on the Kiwanis city entrance sign on N. Main Street and the Adrian Center for the Arts added a festive touch to trees along the street.
Kim Horstman said she and others noticed there were no fall decorations and checked into the plan for winter. Lights required repair, garland had to be freshened up and some new decorations were needed. The group raised $45,000 and spent about $16,000 this season, reserving the balance for spring, summer and fall 2019. The group needs many more volunteers in 2019. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand or provide support in their own way.
There has been a significant increase in visitors downtown, many from outside 49221 (some Ohio plates). The restored buildings, improved lights and decorations in the main 4 blocks, the City / County Christmas Tree, and the Comstock Christmas Riverwalk combine with retail stores, restaurants, bars, arts and entertainment, and community events to delight everyone. Visit Downtown Adrian this season!
